"El cantante Peret y La Troba Kung-Fú han ofrecido en el Lincoln Center de Nueva York un concierto de rumba catalana en el marco del Midsummer Night Swing, un festival de música y danza al aire libre por donde pasan unas 8.000 personas." —

Last Monday night a week, over at Damrosch Park by Lincoln Center, the Young Patrons of Lincoln Center held a night of “cool drinks and dancing under the stars” and called it Tango On the Rocks. Cocktails, dance lessons and dancing to the torrid sounds of Argentina’s Orquestea Tipica Imperial at Midsummer Night Swing, plus DJ Carlos Quiroga, Repor Tango. The only thing missing was Carmen Miranda...for pics and story,

In today’s Brazil, young urban musicians update samba by adding hip-hop, electronica and rock. But as the daughter of Martinho da Vila, a venerated composer of samba do morro (samba “from the hills,” or slums), Mart’nália is heir to a grand and uncommercialized tradition. [

From the Daily News:
"The comeback of the “orquesta típica,” or traditional tango orchestra, may be the most interesting recent trend in Argentine music. Ironically enough, it came about thanks to the very same people who grew up not caring about the signature Argentine genre."

From The NY Sun:
"...Mr. Bragin has worked his programming magic. Nelly McKay had performed the American songbook at Lincoln Center, but she had never sung with a swing band until Mr. Bragin asked her to do so, on the first night of the series. On the second night, Mr. Bragin introduced go-go music to the series, and with it, solo instead of partner dance lessons. The choice of the Loser's Lounge, a band he worked with at Joe's Pub, resulted in a strong showing of their cultish fans, many…

This from the Wall Street Journal:
"A Midsummer Night Swing" is a melting pot. Virtually all human types make an appearance; the place is an anthropologist's delight. Who is here? Everyone. I saw figures right out of Koren's New Yorker cartoons -- Upper West Siders of a certain age -- as well as glamorous East Side sophisticates; downtown kids with tattoos and body-piercings; Orthodox Jews (men with yarmulkes, their wives with wigs); at least one emeritus Columbia University professor in…

As someone who wasn't born until the 80's, I probably shouldn't have had as much fun at the Loser's Lounge night as I did last Friday! The band was awesome, and everyone else seemed to think so too. =) I headed over to Loser's Lounge MySpace to tell them they have a new fan, and I came across these comments from others who were at Swing on Friday:
1) Hope you guys and gals had a great time because we sure did. We are regulars at Midsummer Night's Swing and dance year round 3-4 nights a week. I…

"Nellie McKay has always been a charming chameleon, so her ability to transform herself into the very model of the anything-but-modern swing band chanteuse isn't terribly surprising. It was fascinating, however, to observe her willingness to completely subsume herself in the role of dance facilitator and really let the music do the talking at the opening night of Lincoln Center's annual Midsummer Night's Swing series..."…

Well, it’s about time! After a recent record 6 months without producing a show, my first season at Lincoln Center kicks off tomorrow night with Nellie McKay making her swing dance debut. I went to her rehearsal last week, and it’s going to be a blast – a mix of hard-swinging standards and a few Nellie originals. On Wednesday, one of the funkiest bands of the planet will be bustin’ loose with Washington DC’s godfather of go-go, Chuck Brown. Thursday, take a trip back to the 20’s with the Gatsby-e…
